"Comfort Women" Again (and again ... and again ...)

Postby Hammer » Tue May 29, 2012 7:23 am

The Comfort Women issue keeps coming up in the weirdest places.

In this case Nikon has suddenly canceled a planned exhibit of photos by South Korean photographer Ahn Sehong related to this sensitive topic, ostensibly due to complaints. Whether it's just complaints, or threats from the ultra-right, nobody is saying at this point.

'Various reasons' halted sex slave exhibit: Nikon

Wimps.

Yokkaichi city is sticking to its guns though, and going ahead with the same exhibit:

In contrast to Nikon's decision, the city of Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, will stick to its plan to hold an exhibition of Ahn's comfort women photos at a community hall from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on June 10.

"We have received some complaints. But (Ahn) asked to use the hall and we confirmed there is no violation of city ordinances. Thus there is no reason to reject his request," Yokkaichi official Takuya Sugawa said.

Is there any way that this issue will ever be resolved? I know that there is no interest in doing such a thing, especially when so many different groups love to use this as a crutch for their groups actions. But I sometimes wonder if it would not be a good idea to try and do something to solve this.

Good question. It seems like there's reluctance to let the issue go on both sides.
But repeated attempts at denial on Japan's part (or to be fair, certain factions within Japan) certainly don't help.
On the other hand I can see how giving in to demands for monetary compensation could be a bottomless pit.

The saga continues ...

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20120629a4.html#.T-05KY5Id38

South Korean photographer Ahn Se Hong, whose photos of wartime sex slaves are being exhibited at Nikon Salon in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, urged Nikon Corp. on Thursday not to give in to pressure from right-wingers.

The world-renowned camera maker had originally said it would hold the photo exhibition from June 26 to July 9 at the salon.

But last month the firm canceled the show for "various reasons" after receiving a number of complaints mainly from rightist groups who claim there were no sex slaves or that Koreans and other Asians exaggerate the issue.

50 years from now, for "various reasons," the same times of people will be saying, there no melt downs occurred in Fukushima and anyone that says so is exaggerating the issue.

Clinton says 'comfort women' should be referred to as 'enforced sex slaves'
POLITICS JUL. 11, 2012 - 06:24AM JST ( 59 )TOKYO —
The Japanese government expressed concern Tuesday over remarks attributed to U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton in which she said that the “comfort women,” a euphemism for Asian women who were forced to serve as prostitutes for the Japanese military during World War II, was inaccurate and that the term “enforced sex slaves” was more accurate.

Clinton’s remarks were reported in the Korean paper, the Chosun Ilbo. The paper quoted a diplomatic source in Seoul, who said that Clinton—during a briefing on the Japanese wartime occupation of Korea—corrected a U.S. State Department official who referred to the victims as “comfort women.”

In Tokyo, Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said that Japan would seek clarification of Clinton’s remarks from the U.S. State Department, NTV reported.

The issue of “comfort women” is a thorny issue between Japan and South Korea.

Hundreds of thousands of Asian women, including Koreans, who were forcibly drafted for sex slavery for Japanese soldiers during the war, have been demanding an apology and compensation from the Japanese government for decades.

The Japanese government has repeatedly said it has no plans to reopen talks with Seoul. The government’s consistent position is that the issue of compensation was fully and completely resolved under the normalization treaty.

I completely agree, euphemism is for pussies (no pun intended). So we should also change the Department of Defense back to "the Department of War".

And again ...

Admit ... deny ... admit ... deny ...

Osaka's Hashimoto has brought us back once again to the "deny" phase of the cycle. Or rather he's jumped on the current "deny" bandwagon. One or the other ... I'm losing track. The constant backflips are making me dizzy.

No evidence sex slaves were taken by military: Hashimoto

Didn't Japan already give Korea a shitload of cash back in the 1960's for this, and the Korean government basically spent it on roads and stuff while giving a pittance to a few of the victims and covering the whole deal up?

Whatever. War sucks. Bad shit happens. Why the (great-) grandchildren of those involved should have to fork over cash, again and again, I don't understand. If we give cash to war slaves (or more oddly, people who were paid for their work), who were lucky enough to survive the war.. why not give huge sums of cash to families whose civilian members were killed? Surely being killed deserves more compensation than surviving.

Go a step further. If we're gonna live in the past and demand compensation, perhaps those people whose country was freed by another country should pay tribute to their liberators, forever and ever. But no, they tend to spit on the liberators, too.

Isn't a part of the problem that the pay that many of these women were getting was in military scrip or something, which was declared worthless at the end of the war? Sad. If everyone with Imperial Army scrip that was declared toilet paper got compensated, that's cool. But why should one group get preference over another?

Still, it seems the comfort women story has evolved quite like the Roswell legend. The whole UFO alien coverup angle didn't really exist until someone started making up stories 30 years after the initial incident.

Got my second form-letter death threat via PM from a just-registered user here today. Anyone else?

Same words as the first yesterday, so probaly someone with shit English who collected some generic threats about curb-stomping, killing and stabbing. My first guess on his/her motives were wrong. This new user name also hit Japan Today, calling out 3 out of the 200 posters by name. They 3 were people who dared criticize the Korean version of history with comfort women and Dokdo or something. Just chalk it up as another example of the recent Korean insanity.

There seems to be a bug in PhpBB since new users are not supposed to be able to send PMs... And strangely the last registereded user is Laser Solution who seems to be a humanspambot, not here to stirr crap anyway... (unlike youz shall I add...)

WHICH LEAD ME TO BELIEVE, as a gud conspiramacy terrorist, that you are making shit up to attract pity and attenshiun to yourself... Which would be inline with your usual posting tone and need to feel different/superior/oppressed...

Coligny, the guy who sent the PM to Level3 registered today, but has already been deleted, which is why the last registered user appears to be Laserwhatever.

But yeah, same type of abuse, although he seems to have expanded his repertoire a bit and is sending even longer rants now.

BTW, I think I've found a way to squelch new-user PMs. We'll see.
