Looking at the meteorological agency data, it appears that things could get a little rough around Fukushima on the 21st.

I hope the Tepco people are looking at the meteorological agency data too, and have plans that go beyond just looking.

I hear they already have an emergency committee together tasked with drawing up a list of excuses.

I have come across quite a motley crew of expats who've moved here in the aftermath of 3-11. The most recent was a Russian woman who came here with her J-hubby and child after they found Tokyo a bit too close to Kiev.

If you are talking aboot the light green trace making landfall near hamamamatsu (not the dark green making landfall around my parking lot) the pass overland is so long that it will certainly lose most of his power after Tokyo...

Well, just got e-mail from the Canuck embassy about Typhoon #4, so it must be a doozy.
Dear Canadian citizen,
As you may have already heard on the news, Typhoon Guchol (Typhoon #4) is headed towards Japan. The main island of Okinawa will be hit by strong winds from this afternoon, with very strong winds forecast for late this evening. Okinawa is expected to receive very heavy rain, and the Japan Meteorological Agency is warning people to be aware of flooding in low-lying areas and of the sudden flooding of rivers.
The storm is scheduled to make landfall on Honshu late Tuesday night, with heavy rain and wind expected to last through to Wednesday morning.

...

I just read this YokosoNews headline and misfigured that all was going to be OK since the typhoon was going to "overpass" (disregard) Japan. Image

Typhoon Guchol (2012-4) to overpass Japan thru Wed Jun 20
YokosoNews.com | by katzueno on Monday, June 18th, 2012
JMA warned that the very strong typhoon, Guchol (2012-4), is approaching Okinawa and will expect to land Japan's Main Island on Tuesday, Jun 19, 2012.<
As at 10am on Monday, June 18, 2012, Guchol was traveling South East of Okinawa heading towards the Main Island.
In the morning of Tuesday, June 19, 2012, Guchol may be nearing the Kyushu Region. Then it may land around Kinki (Osaka), and/or Nagoya (Tokai).
Through the evening or night of Tuesday, it may travel through Tokyo (Kanto region).
By the morning of Wedesday, June 20, 2012, Guchol may approach Tohoku (North Japan) area, then may cross Hokkaido.
It's very unusual to have direct hit of Typhoon in June in Japan.

A typhoon warning has been issued. Schools have been closed by/since lunch on Okinawa. Public transportation expected to stop running in the early evening hours. Light intermittent rain, with wind at around 30 kph gusting to 45. Swells of seven to nine meters expected.

Current Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness
TCCOR 1

TCCOR 1: Destructive winds of 50 knots or greater are anticipated within 12 hours.
No school for DoDDS students. Staff and teachers will work normal hours, unless changed by DoDDS superintendent. Fill any containers you can use for water storage. If you live in low lying quarters, make arrangements to stay with a friend. Make final check of food and other supplies.

Yahoo meteo report it as having winds of 40m/s that's around 140 km/h... Unless somebody give him Typhoon grade benzodiazepin I don't see it slowing down that much for okinawa (now, its heading speed is effectively around 30kph)
(This note relate to the 30-45 kph winds, that are barely newsworthy, now the 50 knots is a little more worrisome but still below the take off speed of a Cessna... Can't we put even more different speed units in a single post ? we are missing on parsec, lightyears and yards per half minutes)

Thanks. Stocked up on supplies last night, and have the hatches battened down.

We have another coming in right behind this one, expected early Thursday morning...

Path seems close from the first one, might not have enough remaining heat to spool up. Looking at the sea temp map North of Guchol it's warm, but north east get way cooler. Meanwhile Talim have plenty of warm sea to spool before hitting Taiwan...

Well, that was a letdown...

Got up to about 80 kph winds, which is the speed you have to blow on my apaato to turn her into a squirter. She rattles and hums at anything over 30 kph, but the waterworks really start happening over 60 kph, and it gets wet and wild. Not sure what prevents the locals from making a decent window, but there you go. Next thing I know, ol' yongou was parked right next door, yet "super" was no longer on the menu. It huffed, and it puffed, and it blew itself out.

Despite the letdown ... that's actually good news.

Now there's only the next one to worry about.
