Oops, should have bought a UPS

Postby Hammer » Fri Aug 13, 2010 2:47 pm

Following up on a conversation with Coligny on the FG forum, I ordered an Omron BY50S sine-wave output UPS to keep the critical bits of my system running and shut down the RAID arrays properly if there's a power glitch or outage. It arrives tomorrow ... and only a true geek could be excited about something like that. :geek:

This was prompted by a little scare I had while running a defrag operation a while ago. I had cleverly (?) decided to do this in the midst of a thunderstorm, and about halfway through (the defrag, not the thunderstorm) there was a glitch that was big enough to momentarily dim the lights in the room and cause one of my displays to turn itself off. Nasty. Fortunately the computer itself soldiered on and no loss of data was incurred. But if that glitch had been just a bit longer ...

Ooh, that's a pretty hefty UPS for personal use!
I'll be interested to hear how that works out. Are you going to use the automatic shutdown software?

This is an old topic that I have just moved here to the "Computer Hardware & Software" section, I just thought that while I'm at it I'll report that the Omron BY50S that I bought back in August of 2010, is still running with no problems, and that it came in very handy during the power outages causes by the big earthquake and one of the big aftershocks. It kept me online for about 2-1/2 hours, as I remember, and made it possible to take care of some vital communication before everything went tits up.

Dammit. I was trying to sell a brand new APC 3000VA UPS and a couple of rack controllers. When I first joined this current company they told me to get the office ready in case of anything and was going to put in servers, then all of a sudden one of the top guys hears the magic words "cloud" and everyone goes ga ga over this "cloud storage","cloud computing" so in the end what do we do?

We rent server space from a reputable Japanese company. Never once used the damn thing, didn't even have a chance to buy some HP(they were cheap) or Dell servers to test it on. Now it's a 50+ kg paperweight in the office. Anyone want it for cheap?

Here's the specs: http://www.apc.com/products/resource/in ... l_watts=50

I'm thinking of bringing it home and using it to power the entire house for 6 hours when anything happens, but both my server racks have been taken up with bike parts and bike clothing :)

Piccys or it didn't happen:
