I'm looking to buy a portable A/C unit for my bedroom(not like I need it these days, as we are still using our damn heater it is so cold up here), but do any of you have any recommendations for a good but inexpensive one.

A friend bought a Haier recently at a DIY centre, and has been happy with it.

Yeah, got one window unit from Haier too, model for 8-10 tatmiz... on a south facing sunshine all afternoon 8tatamiz room. Sort of work, noisy... umcomfortable, room fan to circulate the airflow mandatory. Usually run non stop from july to september...

noisy...

coligny, was it easy to install? Did you need a kit for the window or did you rig something up yourself. I saw a nice one on Amazon that I could have sent to my friends address on base, but I worry about the voltage difference and would that screw things up, going from 110 to 100 volts.

If he have standard japanese slide window the install is non destructive and take 5 minutes... as for the voltage difference... I don't think 100 to 110v would be a trouble. appliance are supposed to allow for fluctuation in the provided voltage... in europe, officially 220v appliance run from 190-200 to 240v... Not every house have reliable power... there's spikes, drop and everything inbetween...
